The waters of the Dead Sea (also known as the Sea of Arabah) have been renowned for their therapeutic effects since ancient times. Two thousand years ago, historian Flavius Josephus wrote, "Dead Sea salt cannot be praised too highly...travelers take this salt home because it heals the human body and is therefore used in many medicines." Aristotle also wrote of the waters, and Cleopatra obtained exclusive rights to build cosmetic and pharmaceutical factories in the area. Today, many people are rediscovering this valuable God-given resource.
What makes the Dead Sea so unique is the mineral composition of its water. Whereas normal sea water contains about 3% salts (most of which is sodium), the water in the Dead Sea contains 30-35% of various salts. Most of the salts in the Dead Sea are magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride and bromides, with a lesser proportion of sodium. These other salts are beneficial to the human body in many ways. Magnesium helps combat stress and fluid retention, slowing skin aging and calming the nervous system. Calcium prevents water retention, increases circulation, and strengthens bones and nails. Potassium energizes the body, helps to balance skin moisture and is a crucial mineral to replenish after intense exercise. Bromides act to ease muscle stiffness and relax muscles. Sodium is important for the lymphatic fluid balance, which is critical to immune system function.
